Can I Use My Own DVR?

Hi - I was considering purchasing my own DVR, with its own HDD for storage. I have one Cox HD converter box. Will I be able to record using a "third-party" machine or is the signal scrambled to force you to pay for Cox's DVR option? Thanks!
